Portofelo vs Monefy: An Honest Head-to-Head

Short version: Monefy is faster and simpler, and if you are on Android it is the only one of the two you can have. Portofelo does more with each transaction, particularly receipts, and has budgets that Monefy does not really have. They are aimed at different people.

Where Monefy is better

It is faster, and that matters more than it sounds. Open Monefy, tap a category on the circle, type the amount, done. Two seconds, no navigation, no decisions. Portofelo is quick but it is not that quick, and nothing is. Expense tracking dies from friction, and Monefy has less friction than any app in this category. If you have used it for years without giving up, that is why, and swapping to something with more features is a genuine risk to the habit. It is on Android. Portofelo is not. There is no Android build. If you are on Android, this comparison ends here and Monefy wins by default. The interface is genuinely nice. The category circle is a good piece of design, not a gimmick, and the whole app is legible at a glance in a way that feature-rich finance apps rarely manage. It does not need an account. Neither does Portofelo, but it is worth saying that Monefy has never made you sign up, and that is rarer than it should be.

Where Portofelo is better

Receipts. Point the camera at a till receipt and it reads the individual line items — each product, each price — and categorises them separately. Monefy has no receipt scanning at all. The practical difference shows up on the weekly shop: in Monefy that is one entry called "groceries, €62", and in Portofelo it is the actual list, which is the only version that can tell you how much of it was snacks. Monefy's budgeting is thin — you can see what you have spent, but not really set and track a monthly limit per category with a projection of where the month is heading. That projection is the part that changes behaviour, because it arrives while you can still act on it. Sync that is actually sync. Monefy writes a backup file to your own Google Drive or Dropbox and reads it back. It works, until two devices write at once, and then the failure mode is losing entries rather than getting a warning. Portofelo's Pro sync is server-side and encrypted, and it is optional — turn it off and nothing leaves the phone. The free tier has no caps. Unlimited transactions, budgets and accounts, no ads. Monefy's free version limits accounts and pushes the upgrade.

The honest summary of the trade

Monefy optimises the moment of entry. Portofelo optimises what you can find out afterwards.

If your problem is "I stop logging things after two weeks", Monefy's speed is the correct answer and more features will not help you. If your problem is "I log everything and still do not know where the money goes", that is a receipts-and-budgets problem, and it is the one Portofelo is built for.

Monefy exports CSV, which is the right starting point, but expect to do some column mapping rather than a clean one-click import. Export from Monefy before you uninstall it, whatever you end up using.
